Mission San Xavier del Bac

Mission San Xavier del Bac, nicknamed the White Dove of the Desert, is a sight to behold. We always wonder as we drive to it what a traveler must have thought in times past when they came upon this structure in the middle of almost nowhere. A thought provoking idea for sure. Mission San Xavier del Bac is a National Historic Landmark. The Mission was founded by Father Eusebio Kino in 1692. The construction of the church we see today began in 1783 and was completed in 1797. This makes this the oldest intact European structure in Arizona. That is a big wow for sure.
The exterior is quite impressive. It is visible from the freeway as it is truly the White Dove of the Desert. As you approach the church in the parking lot there are many vendors selling fried bread and other works of the locals. Enjoy, this is so much fun for the adventurous.

So Many Cactus Varieties

When approaching the church the grounds have so many types of cactus. Healthy cactus in so many shapes, sizes, types of needles, colors, and flowers too! Take some time enjoying the cactus as I find many photographic opportunities here as well.
The church’s interior is filled with marvelous original statuary and mural paintings. The docent led tours will give you history, stories, and depth to you knowledge of this facility. It is filled and overflowing with drama, melodrama, mystery, history, thievery, recovery, bandits, heroes and more.
This is a place where visitors can truly step back in time and enter an authentic 18th Century space.

Mission San Xavier del Bac Grounds

Having visited missions all over the south west, I must say that San Xavier is extremely well maintained, and protected.. The church and the interior have been so well protected to give one a real feeling as to what it may have been like a long time ago. The Mission San Xavier del Bac is quite worthy of a stop and a tour, Be sure to see the smaller altar next door it is a wonderful garden and altar. . Just to sit and pray, or listen to the vibrations that have passed before us is an honor and can be quite humbling. I start to run out of words now as the visions and feelings are all internal. Enjoy, Blessings to all.
