Titan Missile Museum

At the Titan Missile Museum
Titan Missile Warhead

The Titan Missile Museum is in the desert just outside of Sahurita, Arizona. Beneath the cactus lies the only remaining Titan Missile silo in the US with a missile in the upright position. During the Cold War, this was a part of the nuclear deterrent system, as it was called. The site contains a Titan Missile in the upright position and the full control system used to govern the process of nuclear missile launch. Before you get to the tour, the lobby of the visitor center has a history on the wall of many of the political events that surrounded the cold war.

For those of us that remember this part of history it is an unsettling reminder of what was. Just imagine that your job was to sit inside a silo surrounded by thousands of cubic yards of concrete, a fortress against any type of attack, and be ready to start armageddon if commanded. Sounds like a permanent nightmare. Talk about PTSD, this is an assignment that is not for the faint of heart. For those that do not remember those days it is one eye opening history lesson that probably cannot be fathomed in one session. The Titan Missile Museum tour takes one through a simulated launch of a nuclear missile and a full look at what the crews lived through for twenty years.

The tour guide was most polite and informative. The knowledge of these people runs deep as most of the tour guides are people who spent a good portion of their lives in side a silo like this one. That gives a viewpoint of history and military procedures that I don’t think you would get anywhere else. I recommend the Titan Missile Museum tour for all. Right wing, left wing, undecided, it does not matter. Everyone should be interested in this informative, incredible, almost unbelievable glimpse into our not to long ago past.
